A woman striving for justice

Fianna Cameron has devoted her life to avenging the death of her father, hanged as a traitor during the Irish Rebellion of 1798. Now, on the eve of her thirtieth birthday, only one last miscreant remains: Major Christopher Pennington, who both oversaw her father’s execution and maligned his honor. Fianna risks everything to travel to London and confront the man who has haunted her every nightmare. Only after her pistol misfires does she realize her sickening mistake: the Pennington she wounded is far too young to be her intended target.

A man who will protect his family at all costs

Rumors of being shot by a spurned mistress might burnish the reputation of a rake, but for Kit Pennington, determined to win a seat in Parliament, such salacious gossip is a nightmare. To regain his good name, Kit vows to track down his mysterious attacker and force her to reveal why she fired on him. Accepting an acquaintance’s mistress as an ally in his search is risky enough, but when Kit begins to develop feelings for the icy, ethereal Miss Cameron, more than his political career is in danger.

As their search begins to unearth long-held secrets, Kit and Fianna find themselves caught between duty to family and their beliefs in what’s right. How can you balance the competing demands of loyalty and justice -- especially when you add love to the mix?

About the author:

Bliss Bennet writes smart, edgy novels for readers who love history as much as they love romance. Despite being born and bred in New England, Bliss finds herself fascinated by the history of that country across the pond, particularly the politically-volatile period known as the English Regency. Though she's visited Britain several times, Bliss continues to make her home in New England, along with her husband, daughter, and two monstrously fluffy black cats.

Bliss's mild-mannered alter ego, Jackie Horne, writes about gender and genre at the Romance Novels for Feminists blog.

What is the hardest part about being a parent?
JAKE: Knowing that bearing my name can mean constant problems for my children.
LLOYD: Nothing yet. My son is still young. Hardest part is finding enough

An Excerpt:

In this excerpt Jake has been gravely wounded and Randy has been through the hell of thinking she was losing him. She is talking with a reporter who wants to write about Jake.

“Ma’am, if I may ask ... how do you do it?” Jeff asks.

“You’re a mother, a grandmother, and wife to a man who has to be difficult to live with.”

Randy glanced at Jake’s guns lying on the table.

“No one understands my husband the way I do, Jeff. No one. I know every detail about his life, including when he was a little boy. I know how he thinks and what his needs are. I know how he suffers silently on the inside. That’s how I do it.” She wiped at her eyes.

“Jake has a good heart. He treats me with total devotion and respect, so no, he’s not difficult to live with. We’ve had some really bad times, a couple of them a big test of our marriage, but deep down I’ve always known how much Jake Harkner loves and needs me.”

She seemed to be in another world for the moment. “And years ago, not long after we’d met and then gone our separate ways, thinking it was best because he was a wanted man, Jake rode out of my life and I headed west to find my brother. The people I traveled with left me at a trading post when they thought I was dying from a snakebite, and the men at the trading post were ... awful. I was in terrible pain, sure I was dying ... and one day I heard Jake’s voice, felt him lift me into his arms and promise me he’d never let me out of his sight again. He’d tracked me down and come back for me. I remember how gentle he was when nursing me back from death, bathing me, feeding me, keeping me warm ... and never once did he take advantage or touch me wrongly. I knew then all I needed to know about him. I fell totally, deeply, madly in love with the real Jake Harkner.”

Book Information:

Book: Earls Just Want To Have Fun
Author: Shana Galen
Publisher: Sourcebooks Casablanca
Genre: Historical Romance

Summary:

His heart may be the last thing she ever steals ...

Marlowe is a pickpocket, a housebreaker -- and a better actress than any professional on the stage. She runs with the Covent Garden Cubs, a gang of thieves living in the slums of London's Seven Dials. It's a fierce life, and Marlowe has a hard outer shell. But when she's alone, she allows herself to think of a time before -- a dimly remembered life when she was called Elizabeth.

Maxwell, Lord Dane, is intrigued when his brother, a hired investigator, ropes him into his investigation of the fiercely beautiful hellion. He teaches her to navigate the social morass of the ton, but Marlowe will not escape so easily. Instead, Dane is drawn into her dangerous world, where the student becomes the teacher and love is the greatest risk of all.

Excerpt:

“While I do not usually object to a woman in this position,” Dane said quietly, “I must confess something about the dagger between your lips is less than romantic.”

Marlowe reached for the dagger, but he was faster, grasping her hands and pinning them at her side. She lost her balance and settled on top of him, and he pushed her down so that she would fall forward if she tried to swing her legs out from under her.

“What, exactly, are you doing?”

She couldn’t answer, not with the dagger in her mouth, and she shook her head, shaking her arms to indicate she wanted to be freed from his hold.

“What’s the matter? Can’t speak with a knife between your lips? Hazard of your profession, I assume.” He began to rise, sliding her along his body, as he did so. Even beneath the layers of bedclothes, she could feel the strength and power of him. His hands, remarkably strong, held hers at her sides. Nothing she did would free them. He was far too strong. It was times like this she hated being a woman. Gideon would have freed himself easily. He was also tall enough that he wouldn’t have needed to climb onto the bed.

When the swell was sitting, with Marlowe conveniently in his lap, he leaned forward so his face was inches from hers. “Drop the knife.”

She wanted to tell him it was a dagger, a subtle but important distinction, but she couldn’t speak and hold on to her weapon. And she couldn’t think very well with her body pressed against his. Something about their positions made her skin tingle and her belly flutter. She should want to pull away. Instead, she fought the urge to push closer, to rock against him. What the bloody hell was wrong with her?

“Drop the knife or I’ll take it.”

She laughed. Just let him try.

“Very well.”

To her surprise, he leaned closer, his lips moving so near to hers she could smell his breath. Like the rest of him, it smelled clean. She was so intent upon smelling his breath, so intent upon the heat of his body pulsing against hers, she forgot to move her head back, and she jolted in shock when his lips touched hers. What was he doing? Kissing her?

But then his teeth flashed and closed on the dagger’s blade, and she reacted too slowly. He yanked it from her mouth, and she had no choice but to let it go or risk the blade cutting the corners of her sensitive flesh.

“Bastard!” she yelled. He released her hands then, allowing the dagger to drop into one of his. She swung at him, and her fist collided with a satisfying thunk against his cheek. But her satisfaction was short-lived as he recovered easily and flipped her over. Suddenly, she was beneath him on the bed, and all the warmth from the bedclothes and his body were covering her. She bucked immediately, trying to throw him off, but he was solid and heavy, and when his hands grasped her wrists and pinned them to the pillow, she knew she was trapped.

No sin stays a secret forever ...

Genre classification: Western Historical Romance

Excerpt:

He sent her a mischievous side-long glance. “Well, I’m sure you’re aware that Montana has the highest concentration of prostitutes in the United States,” he told her as though sharing a secret joke.

She blinked. A beat later her shock melted into wicked amusement. Her mother would have had a fit at the thought of her daughter living in such a wild town. Then again, that was reason enough to stay. She laughed, holding her free hand to her mouth. “I suppose it’s not funny, really,” she scolded herself, still giggling.

A cowboy leaning against a post across the street glanced up at her laughter. He took off his hat and swept her with a look of appreciation and a whistle. His look wasn’t all that different from the one Michael had just given her.

Then it hit her.

“Oh no,” she gasped.

“Something wrong?”

She winced, praying she hadn’t given the wrong impression. “Mr. West, Michael, I should tell you right now that I’m not one of Miss Helen’s girls.”

He stopped short, studying her eyes as if making sure he’d heard her right. Then he flushed red, his eyes large behind his glasses.

“Oh dear.” She bit her lip.

“I’m sorry.” He didn’t try to hide his mistake. “I never should have --”

“No, it’s understandable.”

“Unforgivable, more like.”

“Was it something I did? Was I too forward?”

“No that wasn’t --”

“In college they always told me I was too forward.”

“College?”

“I know traveling with Miss Helen makes me look --”

“Oh no, you look lovely. I mean,” he schooled his expression to seriousness, “you clearly don’t belong with them at all.”

She let out a breath and her sheepish smile returned. “I’m sorry. If that’s what you’re looking for I can go on alone.”

“No! No, that’s definitely not what I’m looking for.” The sparkle in his eyes told another story. “Not that you wouldn’t be what I was looking for if I was looking. But I’m not. Looking, I mean. Though I’d be lying if I said the thought hadn’t crossed my mind. That is, you’re quite beautiful. And from back east. It would make sense ... in a way.”

A grin spread from her lips to her chest. He had no clue what he was saying, bless his heart. It was charming.

“Forget what I just said.” He gave up, letting out a breath then clearing his throat and standing straighter.

Their eyes met in a moment of collective embarrassment. Charlotte found herself unable to stop the laugh that bubbled up from her throat. He grimaced and laughed with her.

“Never mind,” he said. “I’d still like to treat you to lunch.”
