Review: Those Nights in Montreal by Beverley Kendall (e-novella)

Before college, Rebecca and Scott were an item and what they shared felt very special for the both of them, but something happened that drove them apart and love turned to hate, especially for Becca. While college is seen as a fresh start for most, it turned out to be the continuation of an unfinished story for them -- one that Rebecca would love to avoid but can't. They try valiantly to be civil to one another, for the sake of Zach and Olivia -- but feelings have a way of bubbling to the surface, and neither can contain the overflow.

Those Nights in Montreal is the next installment in Beverley Kendall's new adult endeavor, The Language of Love series. In this e-novella, the spotlight is trained on Rebecca and Scott. There was a lot of venom between Becca and Scott when we first met them in When in Paris and we wondered what had happened to them before they came to college. Beverley Kendall adds further tension to the story by introducing more issues: Becca's relationship with her father and Scott's mysterious family history.

Trust is the central issue in this story: the men in Becca's life have all let her down and abandoned her before and she's finding it hard to trust them again. I loved how the story moved on two levels: as Becca and Scott tried to make sense of their relationship, Becca was also dealing with her father -- a man who abandoned her mother when she was pregnant with Becca.

Scott is a great character as well. He could've shrugged off the past drama and moved forward -- but he came back to Rebecca, admitted the mistakes that he'd made and was willing to work it out with her. I also love that he is unwavering in his love for Becca (and isn't afraid to tell her).

Becca and Scott are both given a second chance at love (and at life) and I'm glad that they were both willing to work it out. They made mistakes and stumble to make the right ones -- and this is what makes them utterly relatable. I read this book in one sitting -- not because it was short but because I really wanted to see how Becca and Scott's relationship turned out.

Those Nights in Montreal is book 1.5 in Beverley Kendall's Language of Love series. The next book, April in Milan (April and Troy's story), will be released Fall 2013. To find out more about Beverley Kendall and her books, visit her website. She's also on Facebook and on Goodreads.
